Girls aim to get healthy for districts

Catasauqua’s field hockey team wrapped up its regular season with a match against Pocono Mountain East that went to overtime on Oct. 10 at Catasauqua.

“Right now, toward the end of this regular season, a lot of our starters were injured or a lot of the players out there on the field tonight were nursing injuries and pushed through,” said Catty coach Amanda Freiler. “Districts won’t be for almost two weeks, so we’re hoping to take it easy until they get back to full health and come out strong.”

It was Pocono Mountain East that won, 3-2, in sudden-death overtime, but considering Catasauqua’s missing and/or injured starters, the Rough Riders weren’t fazed by the loss.

“The girls knew that other people were filling in roles. We had a couple more people step up who don’t usually start, so they knew to go out there and do their best, and honestly, they were playing amazing, using their passing and everything we worked on at practice,” Coach Freiler said. “I was very proud of how they played.”

Catty’s Shelby Haldeman put the Rough Riders on the board first with her goal early in the third quarter.

“There were about five opponents in my way from the 45 to the circle,” Haldeman said. “I try and keep my head up, hoping I dodge the defenders.”

East’s Mackenzie Lopez tied the game with 8.5 seconds left in the third.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Catty’s Kamryn Pushkar put the Rough Riders back on top at the 7:37 mark.

“The defender was trying to hit it out, and then I grabbed it and shot right away,” Pushkar said. “It felt really good because we were 1-1, and it made us go up another goal.”

But 75 seconds later, East found the equalizer on a goal by Kayla Doughty.

East threatened again late in the fourth quarter, but a tremendous save by Catty goalie Elizabeth Bass ultimately sent the match to overtime.

“It’s definitely scary because you’re down players, and you have to play defense and offense really well,” said Pushkar.

East clinched the win 90 seconds into overtime after regaining possession on a stop by Catty.

“Considering that we had four people missing, I think that we did pretty well,” Haldeman said.

Catasauqua will compete in District XI playoffs, scheduled to begin on Oct. 21.
