LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Football falls to Patriots

There isn’t much doubt that Freedom has the best football team in the Lehigh Valley this season. With Northampton coming off a lopsided loss to Easton the previous week, there were fans who wondered how the Konkrete Kids would respond to their Homecoming opponent.

The short answer is, pretty well. While it would be disingenuous to suggest that with a couple of breaks the K-Kids could have pulled the upset, it would be reasonable to say state that the game was closer than 42-21.

Northampton racked up 353 yards of offense, did not commit any turnovers, and only punted once. They gained at least 30 yards on every drive except the one that resulted in a punt and the final 2-play drive of the game.

The problem was that they were 0 for 4 on 4th down conversions in Freedom territory. None of them were in tush push yardage and were necessitated by being in no man’s land and trailing in the game, so they were not gimmes.

A couple of deep shots just missed connecting, but overall, as head coach John Toman noted, “We did a great job offensively. The defensive side probably doesn’t feel the same way. But the kids keep fighting. We’re learning to play at this level. Easton and Freedom the last two weeks are kind of the cream of the crop. We’ll have to move on and get ready for Nazareth next week.”

FHS scored touchdowns on 6 of their first 7 drives, and the only one that failed was an end of the first half Hail Mary that Tymir Williams intercepted. Aaron Beete ran for 175 yards on 16 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. Quarterback Chase Walker was 20 of 26 for 209 yards.

The K-Kids hurt themselves with penalties, which was the aspect of the contest that had Toman most upset in the postgame huddle. There were 11 penalties for 124 yards including 5 personal fouls. The chippiness went both ways as Freedom was flagged 8 times for 79 yards.

Northampton quarterback Gavin Taff went 18 for 28 passing for 196 yards. The play of the game for the Kids was a 46-yard bomb where Taff hung in the pocket and took a huge hit but delivered a strike to Ashton Green streaking down the near sideline for a touchdown.

Williams led the receiving corps with 5 catches for 30 yards. Cameron Hersch had 4 receptions for 46 yards. Billy Stuhldreher amassed 47 yards rushing on 16 carries and also caught 3 balls for 39 yards.
