Home run derby, trunk-or-treat event for kids and financial aid night scheduled for October

Four Allentown Central Catholic High School seniors were recently recognized by the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Students nationwide entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Molly Gibson was a semifinalist, making her one of the highest-scoring students in the state. Matthew Keenan, Priscilla Kofroth and George Nimeh were commended for placing among the top 50,000 students who entered the competition.

“Vikings on the Road” has been bringing the Viking spirit to ACCHS partner school walkathons.

Viking Ambassadors, cheerleaders, band members and Viking mascots cheer on students as they walk and participate in games and activities. The cheerleaders and band also perform at the walkathon pep rallies.

Vikette tennis excelled at Districts Oct. 1, 4 and 10, winning District XI 2A titles for singles, doubles and team. Vikette tennis recognized senior players Sept. 24.

Boys soccer seniors were celebrated Oct. 7. Senior Night was held for girls soccer and girls volleyball Oct. 9. Football, band and cheerleading Senior Night will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at J. Birney Crum Stadium, Allentown.

The Red Cross Club will hold a blood drive Oct. 18. Any current student or staff member is welcome to register. Donating blood is greatly appreciated during this hurricane season when many are in need.

The Diocese of Allentown’s 14th annual Men’s Conference will be held Oct. 19 at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Orefield. Fathers and all men from across the Diocese are invited to this event where presenters will discuss faith and fostering a relationship with Christ.

The ACCHS Baseball Home Run Derby will be held 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at Limeport Stadium. The event is Halloween-themed and players of all ages are encouraged to come dressed in costume. Those aged 7 and older are welcome and players will be grouped by age. You can come with a team of four players or come solo and be placed in a team. Dinner from Mario’s Pizza Northampton including penne vodka, meatballs, sausage and peppers and salad will be available for purchase. To join a CYO team, you must either be a member of the team’s parish or a student at ACCHS. If you are a member of another Diocese of Allentown parish without a team, you may register pending waiver approval.

The ACCHS Vikings for Gold Club and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley will host a trunk-or-treat event for pediatric cancer patients and their families 1-3 p.m. Oct. 27 in the parking lot of 1209 Hausman Road.

Students can help by donating candy or by decorating their car and dressing in costume to run the event.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency will host a financial aid night for ACCHS students and their families 6 p.m. Oct. 29. Attendees will learn about state aid and the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid as well as gain expert advice about paying for higher education. The ACCHS Ski & Snowboard Club has opened registration. Students who join receive exclusive discounts at Blue Mountain Resort, Palmerton and participate in group ski/snowboard days with fellow club members. Register by Oct. 31 at https://bit.ly/acchsskipass.

Another congratulations goes out to 2023 alumnus, Michael Brenfleck, who’s “Little Walter’s” eatery was included in “Top 50 Favorite Places in America!” by The New York Times. The eatery in East Kensington, Philadelphia features traditional Polish cuisine and is a tribute to Brenfleck’s grandfather.
