NWL girls volleyball nears playoff berth
Northwestern Lehigh girls volleyball team is 8-8 overall and 7-4 in Colonial League play as it heads into the final couple weeks of the regular season.
The Tigers are in good position to reach the District 11 playoffs as they need to finish the season at .500 overall or in league play. With four league matches remaining they need just one win to secure the district playoff berth.
As the third-place team in the Colonial League, Northwestern is also likely to make the league playoffs for the first time in program history.
Northwestern beat Notre Dame of Green Pond 3-1 (28-26, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20) Tuesday to pull a half-game ahead of the Crusaders in the league standings.
Norah Silfies had 18 kills and seven blocks in the match, while Shannon Green put up 46 assists and 11 digs and Elyse Browning contributed 11 kills and two blocks.
It was a bounce-back win after the Tigers lost to Blue Mountain a day earlier, 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-10, 25-22). Silfies led the Tigers with 17 kills and six blocks, while Green added 40 assists and three kills in the loss.
Northwestern fell to unbeaten Southern Lehigh on Thursday, Sept. 26, 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-6).
The Tigers rolled to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-4) win over Catasauqua on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Silfies finished with eight kills for the Tigers, while Shannon Green added 16 assists and five aces.
Northwestern beat Saucon Valley 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-4) on Monday, Sept. 23. Silfies collected 17 kills and seven blocks to lead Northwestern, while Browning added 11 kills and Green finished with 32 assists.
The Tigers beat Pen Argyl on Thursday, Sept. 19 to start what turned out to be a three-match win streak. The Green Knights had few answers for Northwestern in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-11).
Silfies had 15 kills and five blocks in the win, while Green had 27 assists and two kills.
