Northwestern boys soccer gets to 12-0

The Northwestern Lehigh Tigers just keep winning as they get to the latter stages of their regular season schedule and have remained undefeated with a 9-0-0 record in the Colonial League and an overall record of 12-0-0 this season with six games remaining.

In a nonleague game recently, the Tigers defeated Central Columbia 2-1 on the road behind goals from Jack Mauro and Logan Mesics. Mauro also added an assist on Mesics’ goal. The loss was the first of the season for the Blue Jays (10-1-0).

Following that win, Northwestern was back on the road Tuesday at Moravian Academy (7-3-0, 8-4-0) and came away with their fifth shutout of the season to beat the Lions 3-0. Cole Mertz, Mesics, and Jake Van Lierop all scored for Northwestern with Mauro, Mertz, and Van Lierop adding assists.

“The first 40 minutes in particular were back-and-forth and they got a lot of pressure on us and had good opportunities on their counterattack, but we were finally able to counter them one time and Jake (Van Lierop) put it just off the inside of the post to give us a lead and when we get the lead, we’re a tough team to play and defend,” said Tiger head coach Nathan Hunsicker after the win.

With his goals in back-to-back games, Mesics, a junior, now has seven goals and five assists on the season.

“We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough, physical game and be back-and-forth,” said Mesics. “We knew they had some key guys, and we were able to keep the ball off their foot and we were able to counter well, and we had to fight in the second half, and it just went our way.”

The schedule has games against Saucon Valley (3-6-0, 3-6-0) and Salisbury (0-8-0, 2-10-0) at home before a trip to Slatington to face Northern Lehigh (5-6-0, 5-6-0).

The Tigers have clinched a District 11 playoff spot and have an edge over Southern Lehigh (7-1-1, 10-2-1) and Moravian Academy for the top spot in the league standings. Northwestern also holds the tiebreaker over both of those teams having defeated them during the regular season.
