Huffer hat trick helps beat ‘Canes

The Emmaus High School field hockey team continued its undefeated start to the 2024 regular season as it won both of its games last week on the road, each coming via the shutout.

The Green Hornets, who improved to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, defeated Liberty away from home 9-0 last Monday, September 16th. They then traveled to Abington Heights on Friday afternoon and took down the Comets 13-0.

Against the Hurricanes, there was even scoring in each quarter with two goals in the first, second and third quarters and three more in the final quarter. Gracie Huffer led the offense with a hat trick. Emmy Horner and Sadie Nawarynski each tallied two goals and Sharlise Solano and Madi Lenig both added a goal to round out the scoring. Autum Kernechel recorded four assists, Horner and Nawarynski added two assists each and Solano also had an assist. Emmaus had a 38-0 advantage in shots and 19-0 edge in penalty corners. Aiko Price was not forced into action in the cage.

In the game with Abington Heights, there were seven different goal scorers, led by five goals from Kernechel. Horner and Nawarynski tallied two goals a piece and Lenig, Huffer, Rylie Poll and Addison Povilaitis rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Lenig notched six assists, while Kernechel totaled two and Morgann Orobono, Solano and Povilaitis all contributed one assist. Emmaus had 29 shots and did not allow one for the second straight game, and also held a 14-1 advantage in corners. Price and Emily Romano split time in cage and did not need to make a save.

Emmaus hosted Boyertown in a nonconference game this past Monday afternoon and played at Pocono Mountain East the following night.

The Green Hornets welcome Whitehall to Memorial Field for a conference matchup Thursday night and finish out the week at Penn Manor on Saturday afternoon.
