Hornet girls tennis improves to 13-1
The Emmaus girls tennis team improved to 13-1 this season with wins in its last six matches.
The Hornets beat Blue Mountain in a nonleague match Monday, 6-1.
Ashlyn Phy, Ava Grace Saab, Anshi Kanani and Dani Balik won singles matches for Emmaus. Melena Stetz and Gab Tranguch teamed up for one doubles win, while the pairing of Brooke DiGiacomo and Nat Hillegass also earned a double win.
Emmaus earned a pair of 7-0 wins last week when it shut out Whitehall (Friday, Sept. 13) and Pocono Mountain East (Wednesday, Sept. 11) to improve to 10-1 in East Penn Conference matches. Individual match results for those two matches were not received by the Press.
Emmaus picked up another nonleague win last Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over Saucon Valley.
Phy and Saab won singles matches, while the doubles teams of Stetz/Tranguch, DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Kylie Gleason/Kanani and Balik/Katy Kapp beat their Panther opponents.
The Hornets beat East Stroudsburg North 7-0 on Sept. 10. Sophia Kaufman, Phy and Saab won singles matches, with the doubles teams of Stetz/Tranguch, DiGiacomo/Hillegass, Gleason/Kanani and Kapp/Skyler Thompson earning wins.
Those same players earned wins in a 7-0 victory over Pleasant Valley on Sept. 6, with the exception of Riya Patel joining Kapp in doubles play.
The Hornets’ only loss of the season came against Stroudsburg on Sept. 3 by a score of 4-3.
The Mountaineers swept the three singles matches, while Emmaus won three of the doubles matches to send the result to a tiebreaking doubles match, pairing each team’s top two singles players.
Stroudsburg’s Lana Marsh and Ava Marsh pulled out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Phy and Kaufman.
The Hornets have two regular season matches left on the schedule as they host Nazareth Thursday before finishing at unbeaten Parkland next Monday, Sept. 23.
Through Monday’s matches, Emmaus was 13-1 and in fourth place in the District 11 team rankings. If the Hornets maintain that position they will host a first-round district tournament match.
The EPC Championship Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26. District 11 singles championships are slated for Sept. 30-Oct. 1. District doubles will be played Oct. 3-4. The team tournament begins Monday, Oct. 7 and concludes Thursday, Oct. 10.
