Falcon field hockey starts season 7-2

Salisbury field hockey suffered just its second loss of the season over the past week, but also picked up a win to move its overall record to 7-2 and its Colonial League mark to 6-2 this season.

First up was Catasauqua (5-3-0, 5-3-0) and the Falcons disposed of the Rough Riders 8-2 with junior Gwyn DeFazio scoring four goals in the game to lead the Salisbury offense. Freshman Ella Morgans, sophomore Ellie Schneider and juniors Sarah Beckage and Kendra Morgan each added a goal for Salisbury in the win.

On Monday, Salisbury had a showdown with Southern Lehigh (5-1-0, 6-2-0), a perennial favorite in the Colonial League. The two teams engaged in a defensive battle with the Spartans picking up a 1-0 win.

The Colonial League standings are getting interesting. In the South Division, Southern Lehigh has wins over all three division opponents, while Salisbury has yet to face Saucon Valley or Palisades in division play.

Eight teams will qualify for the league playoffs with Salisbury currently seeded fourth, one game ahead of Catasauqua and a half-game behind Southern Lehigh in the standings.

Monday’s game took the Falcons into a busy stretch of the schedule as they play three games in four days and six games in the next 10 days. After the loss to the Spartans, the Lady Falcons play Palisades (0-5-0, 0-6-1) and Saucon Valley (2-4-0, 3-5-0) before facing Bethlehem Catholic (1-8-0) in a nonleague game on Saturday.
