Emmaus rolls past Central Catholic
It was a rough weekend two weeks ago as the Emmaus High School football team suffered its first loss in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and at home to boot, falling to Easton 28-21.
The Green Hornets needed some positive momentum, and quick, and they found it in their next game.
Emmaus made quick work of Central Catholic in an EPC West Divisional game, winning 38-6 last Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
The Green Hornets, who improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, put the game into the mercy rule (35-point margin) in the first half and led 35-0 at halftime. They scored 38 unanswered points within the first two-and-a-half quarters and never looked back.
Quarterback Jerek Cooper accounted for three touchdowns, two through the air and another on the ground to help lead the offense Saturday.
Reilly Bechtel got the scoring going in the first quarter as he broke open a 67-yard touchdown run. Then, on back-to-back possessions, Cooper connected with Samuel Stephan from seven yards out and then with Neo Michel for a 21-yard touchdown pass and catch as Emmaus went on top 21-0 after the opening quarter.
To cap off the touchdowns in the game, Jay Santos and Cooper recorded a 45-yard score and 31-yard touchdown, respectively, in the second quarter to push the Green Hornet advantage to 35-0.
Will Buck, who connected on five-of-five extra points, kicked a 44-yard field goal early in the third quarter to round out the scoring and give the Green Hornets a 38-0 lead. The Vikings (2-4, 1-2) recorded their first touchdown on a 12-yard pass in the fourth quarter. They went for two points, but the attempt failed.
Cooper completed six of nine passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing four times for 66 yards and a score. Bechtel ran for 72 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Santos had 64 yards rushing and a score. Stephan caught three passes for 23 yards and a touchdown, while Michel had a catch for 21 yards and a score.
Defensively, Ben Dennis, Robert Edwards and Michel all finished with five tackles, with Dennis tallying three tackles for loss and Edwards two. Dorrian McCargo and Jah’Khi Daves both came away with an interception.
Emmaus hosts Whitehall (2-4, 2-1) this Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium in the second-to-last home game of the regular season.
