Easton erases 14-point deficit

The Emmaus High School football team was soaring high, riding a three-game win streak heading into its game last weekend.

The Green Hornets started the game off like they were ready to win their fourth in a row, scoring 14 straight points to open the game and holding a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. But Easton rallied to score 21 unanswered points and finish off Emmaus in overtime, winning 28-21 last Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference cross-divisional matchup.

After the Red Rovers (4-1 overall, 2-0 EPC) took their first lead of the game on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Cole Ordway to Jasir Frutchey to go on top 21-14 with 3:41 left in the third quarter, Emmaus was still trying to find its way offensively in the second half, having been shutout for a span of over 25 minutes.

Easton had opportunities to expand upon its lead, but missed a field-goal attempt and turned the ball over on downs.

The Green Hornets finally found back the offensive momentum late in the fourth quarter. It started with a 63-yard run by Reilly Bechtel that took them to the one yard line. After three downs that did not gain a yard and then a false start penalty that pushed the offense back to the six, Jerek Cooper connected with Samuel Stephan for a six-yard, tying score on fourth down with 3:54 to play.

The Emmaus defense then gave its offense a chance to win it in regulation as it forced a Red Rover punt that the Green Hornets started their final drive from midfield. Bechtel set up his team inside the 20-yard line after a 25-yard reception from Cooper, but a 22-yard field goal missed with just 0:07 left.

The Red Rovers received the ball first in overtime and scored a touchdown on a two-yard run. Bechtel then had a 10-yard touchdown run called back because of holding and the Green Hornets were unable to recover as an interception in the endzone ended the game.

Emmaus built a 14-0 advantage midway through the second quarter thanks to a pair of scoring runs by Cooper, the first a 74-yard sprint on the Green Hornets’ opening drive and the next a one-yard sneak.

Cooper finished 9-of-22 through the air for 93 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Bechtel had 76 yards rushing. Stephan caught three passes for 36 yards and a score.

Emmaus is at Central Catholic on Saturday night in their first West Divisional game of the regular season.
