Bissell scores 50th career goal in win over Tribe

The Lady Tigers picked up three lopsided wins and clinched a spot in the district playoffs this past week when they defeated Pen Argyl 7-0, Southern Lehigh 8-0 and then opened the new week with an 8-0 win at Lehighton. Northwestern is now 8-0-0 in the Colonial League and 11-0-0 overall this season.

Northwestern held a slim 1-0 halftime lead over Pen Argyl (0-6-0 Colonial, 2-6-0 overall) before coming out with a barrage of goals in the second half. Brook Balliet, Paige Bissell, Syenna Flores, Emily Kistler, Sophia Schaffer, Mykaela Yanders and Kherington Yezik all scored goals in the win. Flores’ goal came on a penalty kick in the second half.

Yezik added two goals to help lead the Tigers to a shutout win over the Indians (2-7-0, 3-8-0) and was joined in the scoring by Balliet, Bissell, Marlyse DeLillo, Alexis Kercher, and Schaffer. Balliet’s goal was the 50th of her varsity career.

After allowing just three goals last season, Northwestern has given up just two goals to their opponents this season and has recorded nine shutouts to outscore their opponents 69-2.

The Tigers currently are the top seeded team in District 11 2A girls soccer and were the first to clinch a spot in districts. The only other team to clinch a district playoff spot is Bangor (7-1-0, 9-1-0) in 3A.

In the league standings, both Moravian Academy (7-0-0, 7-1-0) and Saucon Valley (7-0-0, 7-0-0) remain undefeated as they battle with Northwestern Lehigh for the top spot in the Colonial League playoffs. The Lady Tigers are closing in on clinching a league playoff spot as well as earning the trip to districts.

After playing at Palmerton (2-3-0, 3-4-0) on Thursday, Northwestern meets both Moravian Academy and Saucon Valley for the first time this season in games with huge playoff implications. The Tigers host the Lions next Tuesday and then play the Panthers on Thursday in Saucon Valley.
