St. Mary’s holds Oktoberfest celebration

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, also known as Annunciation Catholic Church, in Catasauqua, held an up-tempo Oktoberfest Sept. 21 in the church social hall, 122 W. Union St. The event ran full tilt during the 5-9 p.m. time frame, with excellent food, music, refreshments, raffles and — a staple at Oktoberfests held around the world — a wide variety of beers.

Kim Smith, church secretary, and David Domin, active church volunteer, were the leaders of the hardworking team that labored to make and serve the food, ensuring a successful evening.

Domin also held the important role of “biermeister” as he cheerfully staffed the beer stand. Sales were brisk from the moment the social hall’s doors opened.

Oktoberfest originated in Germany Oct. 12, 1810, to celebrate the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis 1, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The original Oktoberfest lasted about a week and ended with an exciting horse race.

Cynthia Lehr, of Catasauqua, staffed the basket raffle. A number of baskets had a seasonal autumnal theme.

Catasauqua resident Tommy Burke enjoyed the friendship, music, food and drinks at the event. He noted he is enjoying his recent retirement from his business, Burke’s Provisions, and is not missing the daily work of running a business. Burke added he now has more time to attend Mass.

Jean Sharkasy, of Whitehall, was delighted to reconnect with a friend she had not seen in about 30 years.

In abundance at the event was “gemutlichkeit.” This German word is defined as geniality and friendship.

The event offered a menu featuring tasty selections of homemade German and American foods, such as smoked sausage, bratwurst, German potato salad, hamburgers and more.

German polka music was provided by Robbie Lawrence and the Steelworkers Polka Band. Visit the band’s Facebook page to book them to play at your next event.

It was a full house of revelers, and the festivities were enjoyed by all.
