Library to mark 100th

Block party is planned for Oct. 12

The Public Library of Catasauqua is planning a big birthday celebration, and organizers are hoping the community is planning to attend.

A celebration recognizing the 100th anniversary of the library, 302 Bridge St., will be held noon-4 p.m. Oct. 12.

Organizers are billing the event as a block party. Third Street, between Pine and Bridge streets, will be closed to traffic. That’s where this family-friendly celebration will take place.

In his recent Catasauqua Press column, Brad Rogers, the library’s new director, said the block party is planned to celebrate and to thank the community that supported it for 100 years.

“Join us for fellowship and fun!” he added.

The event is free.

Highlights of the day will include games and activities for the kids, including face painting.

A puppet show is also planned.

Wildlife ambassadors are expected to offer a presentation.

According to organizers, a special guest is expected — Bruce the Bear.

Food trucks will be on site to offer food, drinks and other treats for purchase.

According to Rogers, in 1924, the Woman’s Club of Catasauqua organized a public library for the citizens of two boroughs, Catasauqua and North Catasauqua. Operated out of the club location at the beginning, the library soon became an independent entity located in the old church building at Third and Bridge streets.

“Here we have remained!” Rogers added.
