Field hockey team preps for postseason

The Whitehall field hockey team sits at 10-6 so far this season with one game left against rival Northampton, at the time of this article. The girls look to be in good shape for an EPC berth, likely getting a seven or eight seed.

The girls have a clinched a District 11 berth with that 10-6 mark as of early this week.

The team is on a bit of a roll with wins over Becahi and Moravian Academy. They dropped a 2-0 game to Easton but beat Hazleton 4-1, winng three of their last four.

“The team has been putting in the hard work to secure a spot in postseason play,” said head coach Gabi Smith. “With a current record of 10-6, the team is gearing up for a highly anticipated and challenging matchup against Northampton on Oct. 8.”

Leading the charge on offense are sophomore Kerigan Dreisbach, who has tallied an impressive 18 goals and 4 assists, and senior Lydia Keppel, contributing 9 goals and 5 assists.

“As the season progresses, the team remains focused on improving its flow of play and refining quicker passing strategies to retain possession of the ball as one unit,” Smith said. “Underclassmen have begun stepping up, with freshmen Ella Grohotolsky and sophomore Ava Kneller making valuable contributions. The senior class continues to play a pivotal role in the team’s success with their wealth of knowledge and experience.”

Smith said midfielders Emmy Kern, Lydia Keppel, and Olivia Fonzone have been driving offensive opportunities alongside points Ava Kozak and Sara Mullin.

Smith added that defensively, players like Lily Trocki, Josie Shultz, and Emily Grol have formed a formidable defensive unit, making it tough for opponents to break through. On the offensive end, forwards Molly McFetridge, Dreisbach, and Audra Sommer are focused on capitalizing on scoring chances. The team has also benefited from the versatility of Mati Derkacs, who has been effective across multiple positions on the field.

“Facing strong competition this season has highlighted areas for improvement, such as taking faster free hits and improving recovery on transitional plays,” Smith said. “The team remains committed to learning from each game, embracing every challenge as a chance to grow. Their goal remains unwavering: to give their best effort in every game and continue pushing toward success in the postseason.”
