Field hockey eyes playoff berth

Catasauqua’s field hockey team is looking to possibly lock up a district playoff game this week.

The Rough Riders (7-10) will host Pocono Mountain East in their final regular-season game Thursday. Win or lose, Catty likely will secure a district berth, but a victory can assure it, and provide a home game in the Class 1A bracket.

Catty dropped a 2-1 decision to Moravian Academy in an opening district round game last season.

“We are looking to boost our rankings in our final game,” said second-year head coach Amanda Freiler. “If we win, we feel we can get a home field advantage.”

Last week, the Roughies were shutout by Wilson, 4-0, and also were routed by Southern Lehigh, 8-0.

On their senior night, Oct. 3, they honored Zoe Roth, Brianna Chapman, and Juliana Vazquez and manager Maliyah Price. The team responded with a 5-1 victory behind a hat trick from Shelby Haldeman as well as goals from Roth and Chapman.

The following day, the Roughies’ Haldeman scored the winning, overtime goal with 35 seconds remaining in a 2-1 victory over Palisades. Haldeman also scored the team’s first goal, and she leads the team with 13 goals and eight assists.

Along with the steady play of Haldeman, Freiler also has been impressed with Roth, junior Dakota Velus, and sophomores Ava Akus, Chloe Paulus and Gia D’Alessio. Sophomore and first-year goal keeper Lizzy Bass had been a consistent force.

“Zoe had fluctuated between forward and mid, and she does a fantastic job on the left side,” said Freiler. “Ava, Chloe, and Gia have been holding the defense down in the backfield.

“Lizzy has been getting shot on like crazy, but she does not let that get her down. She is improving every game.”

Before this week, the Roughies had a five-game losing streak, but Freiler still saw a tight team bond. It has been the difference for the team this season.

“We were in good spirits despite the losing streak,” said Freiler. “We’ve had a few injuries throughout the season, and other girls stepped up.

“We got off to slow start and had some injuries last year, and we made a district run. We’re looking forward to getting back there.”
