Golfers eye success

Six Northampton golfers were set to take part in the District 11 Tournament Tuesday, which took place after Press deadlines.

Five of the six golfers advanced after qualifying at the District 11 qualifier last week.

Kohler Strohl was ten over and took sixth, Gavin Pychinka was tied for eighth at 12 over, CJ Stumpf was tied for 18th at 15 over as was Gabe Gower. Jayden Blieler was tied for 24th at 16 over.

Derek Moyer, thanks to his top finish at the EPC tournament didn’t have to take part in the qualifier.

The Kids finished second a couple weeks ago at the EPC Tournament to a tough Nazareth team, but Northampton head coach Brian Davies saw it as a missed opportunity.

“EPC’s were a missed opportunity,” Davies said. “The course (Great Bear) was difficult and some of our strongest golfers took penalty strokes. Although we finished second place, we were hoping to win a consecutive championship.”

Moyer finished third at the EPC event and shot a personal best 76, according to Davies.

Although the District 11 Tournament will have taken place by the time this article is published, Davies was optimistic about his team’s chances.

“We lost the EPC League Championship to Nazareth and the Tournament Championship to Nazareth; however, we have another bite at the apple with districts at the Steel Club,” Davies said.

Davies added that, individually, Pychinka, Strohl, Moyer, Stumpf and Gower will seek to place in the top five and go to the PIAA state championship at Penn State.
