Golfers advance to district tourney
Liberty, Freedom, and Bethlehem Catholic all had golfers advance to the PIAA District 11 Championships at the Steel Club in Hellertown Oct. 1.
Trent Stahley and Philippa Grigsby were Liberty’s entries. Stahley shot an 88, and Grigsby had a 115 at the East Penn Conference (EPC) championships. Both players have been consistent for the Hurricanes all season, and they will look to continue at districts.
“Trent had a very solid season for us, averaging a solid 80 through all the round,” said Liberty head coach Steve Bradley. “His low round for the year was a 75 at Allentown Central Catholic. He’s a smaller lefty that generates incredible power in his drives. If he can tighten his approach shots and putting, he can surprise a lot of people at districts.
“Phillipa has been working on her game all season. She takes golf seriously and enjoys playing with the other girls from our team and Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic during practice round. We are very excited to see what she can do at the district championship.”
Freedom saw Nick Hoffman and Nolan Harriman advance. Hoffman shot an 84 and Harriman fired an 88 at the EPC Championship. Matt Heineman shot a 91 at the EPC, and he missed the cut by four strokes.
Head coach Mike Evans likes the chance of his golfers. He expects the cut at districts to be in the range of 77 to 79, and his golfers had low scores in the low 80s in a practice round at Steel Club last week.
“Both Nick Hoffman and Nolan Harriman have a chance at advancing to the PIAA tournament,” said Evans. “They will likely have to shave a few strokes, but the course sets up well for their strengths, and they should be competitive.”
Derek and Zach Ostrosky along with Ralston Rowlands were Bethlehem Catholic’s qualifiers for districts. Derek shot a 90, Zach had a 108, and Rowlands had a 94 at the EPC tournament. Derek Ostrosky, a senior, advanced to the state tournament last year.
“With the underclassmen making districts, it bodes well for Becca’s future golf success,” said head coach Mark Csencsits. “It would be nice to have one or all three medal and go to states.”
