Golf team optimistic about the future

Whitehall head golf coach George Cowitch is optimistic his young club can take another step forward in the 2025 season.

The Zephyrs finished 3-12 this season after a 5-10 slate last year, but Cowitch has seen plenty of progression.

“We definitely we more competitive this season even though the record was worse,” said Cowitch. “We had six matches decided by eight strokes or less. We shot our lowest score of 389 against Pocono Mountain West, and we were in the 420s all season. Our average was much better than it was last season.”

The team was paced by senior Tommy and junior Jack Lloyd, who were the Zephyrs’ leading scorers, and they were the usual top scorers for each match, averaging an 82 for the season.

The Zephyrs will have several players back in the fold. Among those who consistently saw action this year and will return next year are Jack Lloyd, Mason Nomie, Kevin Fritz, Bert Cohan, Parker Zigenfuss, and Logan Shean.

Jack Lloyd saw plenty of positives to build upon for next season.

“I was happy with our team results, and we shot a new team low,” he said. “I know there is room for improvement. It was great team experience.

“Moving forward, I know the coaches are working really hard to get us swinging in the offseason. I know we are losing some great teammates and golfer. I believe we will have a solid roster next season.”

Both Lloyds qualified for the recent East Penn Conference (EPC) championships at Great Bear Golf Course.

“Neither of them shot particularly well, as most players shot 15 to 18 strokes over their averages,” said Cowitch. “It was another tough day at the district qualifier, as they failed to move on to the district championship.

“We took a lot away from the two opportunities, and we hope to have a player qualify in the future into the district championship.”
