Catty football aims to end skid when they take on JT

Through his team’s last two games, Catasauqua head football coach Joe Henrich has perceived a good evaluation of his team.

The Roughies got off to a 3-0 start, but they have recently dropped lopsided decision to Notre Dame (63-7) and Saucon Valley (62-14). They earlier lost a 42-35 shootout against Salisbury.

For the Roughies, it is still a process.

“We played two very good football teams,” said Henrich of his team’s two latest defeats. “They both very big, strong football teams who have built a winning culture. When you get behind, you can get away from things that you were taught.

“We’re not there yet, and we’re not happy with what has happened. They were able to execute better than us. We have to get a level of consistency, and get better at everything.”

The Roughies played without starting quarterback Aiden Reilly, who did practice some during the week but was unavailable for the game. Running back Jordan Bradshaw filled in at quarterback before leaving the game with an injury. Fellow running back Cadeo Estronza finished the game at quarterback against Saucon Valley.

Henrich stated a starter for this week’s game at Jim Thorpe will be named in the latter part of the week.

“It will be a day-by-day,” said Henrich about his quarterback decision. “Cadeo came in and made some really nice, long runs. He is small, but he gives it his best shot. We need to get him the ball more.

“We see how the week goes.”

Henrich also cited the play of Chris Wellington, the team’s H-back and a linebacker.

“Chris is doing a nice job,” said Henrich. “He switched positions this year, and he will do whatever is asked of him. He had been very reliable for us.”

As for Jim Thorpe, the Olympians (1-5) will enter the game with a five-game losing streak, but Henrich won’t overlook them.

“They are big and physical,” he stated. “They have been playing a higher level of competition with bigger schools compared to what we see.

“They are not a bad football team. They have a solid running back, and their quarterback is an athlete. We’ll have our work cut out for us.”

PREDICTION: This is the first meeting between the two teams since Colonial-Schuylkill league merger ... After their opening 38-15 win over Palmerton, Jim Thorpe has been outscored 251-33 in the last five games. Quarterback Cole Lazorick has averaged 172 yards passing per game, and he has been the Olympians’ leading ball carrier along with Josh Louk. Andrew Curran has 22 receptions for 221 yards with a touchdown … Estronza ran for 174 yards on 11 carries, one a 57-yard touchdown against Saucon Valley. Bradshaw was six-for-seven for 53 yards passing last week, and he leads the team in rushing with 351 yards with three touchdowns. Manny Bolmer has a team-high 20 receptions for 532 yards with eight touchdowns. Wellington has a team-high 26 tackles and Bolmer has 21 ... Roughies will have a tough time heading north. Estronza will be the key. He needs to have a big night running the ball, and the Roughies’ defense needs to find itself again. Thorpe has been battle-tested playing against schools bigger than them, and that could come into play here. Not sure if the Roughies can pull it together with a shaky quarterback situation unless Reilly returns. Roughies need a win to get it back on track, but can they pull everything together. This will be a tight one, and leaning with my heart instead of my head here. Coach Snyder will owe me three Potts’ hot dogs ... ROUGHIES, 21-18.
