Waste disposal bids opened

Alburtis Borough Council met Sept. 25 where Council President Ron DeIaco opened the meeting, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a public comment session.

Council members unanimously approved the minutes from the Sept. 11 meeting and authorized the payment of bills dated Sept. 26. The fiscal consultant’s report was next approved as well.

In administration, council opened bids for solid municipal waste collection. Each of the bids was either 3- or 5-year contracts, with an option to extend a year on each. Bids were received from Whitetail Disposal, Solid Waste Services, J.P. Mascaro & Sons and Waste Management of PA Inc.

A bid was not awarded during the meeting but will be decided on a later date after council members have time to review each of bids. Unfortunately, one of the bids received was incorrectly input into the bidding process. There is a chance council may vote to rebid at the next meeting.

Following the bid openings, Debbie Jack from the Lower Macungie Library addressed council, discussing library services offered for the coming year. She really wanted to emphasize the Lower Macungie Library serves Alburtis Borough residents as well and encourages everyone to get involved. A library card stays active for three years before renewal is needed.

Council acknowledged two important state allocations: $15,149.19 for the fire relief fund and $61,945.56 for pension state aid. Solicitor Dave Knerr provided an overview of the state pension aid and the Minimum Municipal Obligation, explaining their impact on the borough’s budget. A motion was approved to put the money received by the state pension aid into the police pension plan.

Before adjourning, council entered into an executive session to discuss personnel matters. The meeting was adjourned thereafter without a vote needed.

The next Alburtis Borough Council meeting will be held 7 p.m. Oct. 9. Meetings are held at 260 Franklin St. in the Alburtis Borough building.
