Saul hits 100 wins
The Northampton field hockey team is one of the most consistently good squads that the Konkrete Kids have year after year and that is in large part to due to the program built by head coach Carrie Saul. The team has had a winning record every year since she took the reins in 2016. On Saturday at Nitschmann Middle School, Saul recorded her 100th win as coach of her alma mater.
Saul commented on her milestone, “It’s good. To reach it with two different programs (Saul won over 100 games at P’burg before coming to Northampton via Catty) as well, it’s a testament to the kids that I’ve had. They work hard. I try not to think about myself, but I’m really happy that both my kids (daughters Brooke and Jordan) are on the team that got it done.
The game itself will not go down among Saul’s most memorable games as the K-Kids struggled to a 1-0 win against a 3-5-1 Freedom squad.
The team generated 22 corners, so many that they had to use the same play more than once during the game.
In the end, it was a goal by Lauren Reznick one minute into the third period that was the only scoring on the afternoon. Madison Williamson assisted on the goal.
Saul lamented, “We ran through everything. We just weren’t executing today. We had no problem getting corners. There were a couple of opportunities when I wished they would have held the whistle because we were getting there.”
Goalkeeper Octavia Reichelderfer was not tested often, but there were a few moments when she came up big to preserve the shutout. Those moments were especially crucial in the fourth quarter where the Kids received two green cards and competed a player down for four nonconsecutive minutes of the final period.
Northampton is currently 8-4 on the season and 6-4 in the EPC. The most difficult part of their regular season schedule is behind them, and they would be considered a slight to significant favorite in their 6 remaining games.
This afternoon they host Liberty in one of those slight favorite games. Then on Saturday morning, Upper Perk comes for a visit. A strong finish to the season would put the K-Kids in familiar territory, a 5 seed in the postseason playing quarterfinal EPC and district games at Nazareth.
