Liberty, Freedom win again

Shawn Daignault counted each finger on one hand when addressing Liberty’s football team last Friday night. Five fingers for five wins as Liberty improved to 5-0 on the year following a 42-0 win over Dieruff.

For a program that has struggled to win games the last decade, Liberty football is back and Daignault enjoyed the moment with his team in a dominant victory over a previously undefeated Husky (4-1) squad.

“We’ve been asking for a complete game from these guys all year and we finally got it,” said Daignault. “We’re going to enjoy this one and we’ve really been focused on each week and that’s a sign of growth from these guys.”

Gabe Green ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns to pace Liberty’s mercy-rule win. The result was certainly a sign of progress after being scoreless at halftime with Dieruff a year ago and settling for a 14-0 win.

“It was a dogfight last year,” he said. “We understand this is a Dieruff team that’s going to come and play and we wanted to avoid that situation and establish our will in the game and not get ourselves in that situation. That team is dangerous and I know they had a couple guys out, but I have a lot of respect for what their coach is doing there. They played hard and clean and they’ve come a long way.”

Liberty led 21-0 at halftime and then saw the game pop in the third with two Green rushing scores. Quarterback Antonio Fontanez threw for 107 yards and a touchdown. He also added 33 yards on the ground along with a rushing touchdown as well.

“I wanted to see the offense execute,” Daignault. “We fumbled on the first possession and if there’s anything we need to work on this week it’s ball security after putting it on the ground a few times, but we just got to keep getting better each week.”

After all the growing pains this group of players have gone through over the past two years, for Liberty to be undefeated and in the playoff picture is a refreshing sight that everyone in the program is certainly enjoying.

“They love being around each other and it’s a good group of kids,” Daignault said. “We never have negativity and they show up everyday with intent to get better. They’re not perfect, but we’re still growing and it’s exciting to watch.”

Freedom (5-0) continued their hot start to the year with a 56-16 win over Allen. Aaron Beete ran for two scores and quarterback Chase Walker threw for two touchdowns and ran for one.

Both teams hit the road this week, as Liberty travels to East Stroudsburg North (2-3) and Freedom visits East Stroudsburg South (4-1).
