LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS playing like one of area’s best

Liberty’s volleyball team has been on a roll of late and they punctuated their hot streak with a major win last week. The Hurricanes have won six straight matches and beat Parkland in five games last week to push them to 7-2 on the season and second in the District 11 4A power rankings, only sitting behind Emmaus (10-1).

Fir first-year head coach Fernando Torres, it’s the type of continued success the program has been used to in recent memory.

“We have been blessed enough to have had tremendous success for many years now but every season no matter our record has had its own unique challenges,” said Torres. “While the amount of wins may change from year to year, our culture, the standard and expectations from which we operate does not. We hold our student athletes to these very high standards, so they understand the type of dedication and commitment it takes to be a Liberty Hurricane. Our culture is less about wins and losses and more about playing volleyball the right way, trusting one another and understanding that competing every day at a high level requires a great deal of discipline and effort especially since winning isn’t guaranteed. Winning asks everything of you and promises you nothing in return.”

The Hurricanes have not looked back since back-to-back losses to Bethlehem Catholic and Central Catholic early in the season and Torres knows those matches against two of the best programs in the EPC this season proved to be valuable lessons.

“Those two early season losses provided us an opportunity to refocus, lock back in and show our resolve and mental fortitude,” he said. “We don’t sugar coat things at Liberty, we have tough constructive solutions based conversations that allow us to refocus and lock back in. We understand as a program we need everyone on the team regardless of role pursuing and pushing each other toward the same team focused goals and that’s what those early setbacks allowed us to do.”

The ‘Canes look to continue their momentum with matches against Pocono Mountain East, East Stroudsburg North and Northampton this week.

Bethlehem Catholic (8-1) picked up two wins since losing to Central, knocking off Northampton and Dieruff last week in a pair of sweeps. The Hawks face Stroudsburg, Easton and East Stroudsburg North this week.

Freedom (5-6) is battling for their playoff lives down the stretch, as they have Pleasant Valley and Nazareth on deck this week with the hopes of getting back to the .500 mark.
