Girls soccer defeats Easton
The Northampton girls soccer team is off to the best start in program history and claimed a signature win last Thursday as they downed Easton 1-0 under the lights on Joan Kremus Field.
Head coach Michael Missmer confirmed the magnitude of the contest, “This was big for us. It’s always a spirited game. They’re a good team. They’re well-coached and they always come and bring it hard.”
The lone goal came at 22:14 of the first half when sophomore Alayna Hahn found some space between the goalie and the nearside post and neatly knocked it through the gap.
Saige Korpics, who assisted on the goal, described the play, “We’ve been working in practice on through-balls, so basically she’ll make a turn around the defender and then you find the little through-ball and just slot it in there. As soon as I saw her make that run around, I slotted it in there and she got it in the back of the net.”
From there on, the team stayed aggressive, outshooting the Rovers in both halves even while protecting the lead.
Defensively, the Kids have been terrific. They have only allowed 3 total goals through 11 games, two on penalty kicks and one on a free kick.
Goalkeeper Emma Fry spoke their stinginess, “The defense is doing a great job. Every game is a team effort and it’s really showing on the field. I’m not getting as many shots as I normally do and everyone is holding it down. I think it’s awesome.”
Of course, Fry does her fair in keeping the clean sheet and came up with a number of big saves against Easton. Missmer described it as, “Those were literally video game saves where your goalkeeper is 99 on save and you’re like, ‘That’s not fair.’ They were insane saves, especially the second one.”
The team has a huge game on Tuesday night when they travel to Nazareth to take on the Blue Eagles. Both teams are 9-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the EPC, currently tied for 4th place in the conference behind Central, Emmaus, and Parkland. The contest could swing home field advantage in the EPC quarterfinals.
Speaking of the postseason, wins over East Stroudsburg South and Stroudsburg officially clinched a district playoff berth for the K-Kids. It is the earliest in the season that the program has ever qualified for the postseason.
