Girls hoping to pick up more victories

For the Catasauqua girls’ soccer team, these are the version of baseball’s dog days.

The Rough Riders began the season on the short end of a 3-0 loss to Kutztown. However, they rebounded with a pair of wins, shutting out Salisbury, 2-0, and edging Wilson, 2-1.

Faith Daku had three of their goals in the opening span, and Mia Gomes added a goal. Brooke Barna had a strong start in the nets and the Roughies’ overall defense played well.

Their scoreless game against Jim Thorpe was suspended due to a storm.

“We had a great start to our season,” said first-year head coach Dave Harth. “Our defense was solid, and Brooke Barna got off to a great start.

“It was important for us to play well early. We knew we had a tough schedule ahead of us.”

However, the Roughies hit a tough spell with losses and injuries. They suffered a nine-game losing streak in which they scored a total of six goals.

Heading into this week, Barna had recorded 57 saves, and Daku was their leading scorer with five goals, and Gomes had three. Daku, Caroline Rodriguez, and Lilly Gacitua were also sidelined with injuries.

Harth also cited the play of freshmen Haley Cedeno and Jess Mankos both of whom have been consistent contributors.

The Roughies ended their nine-game drought with a 1-0 victory of Jim Thorpe from their previous suspended game.

“We hit a tough patch lately losing several straight,” noted Harth. “We were bitten by the injury bug losing Caroline, Lilly and Faith for several games. Brooke Barna was excellent in goal, and our defense has been doing a strong job of keeping us in games late.”

Catty began this week with an overall 3-10 record and hosted Pen Argyl Tuesday. They then have four games left on their schedule.

“Our team is giving great effort,” stated Harth. “It is great having Lilly back from her injury. We’re looking to have a last part of our season.”
