October packed with community events

On Oct. 6, St. John’s Lutheran Church will host its 100th anniversary. The celebration will start with a traditional Sunday service that will include a German part and hymns performed and offered at the very first St. John’s Church service held Oct. 5, 1924.

After the service attendees may enjoy a fellowship organized by the stewardship committee that will include refreshments, baked goods, tours, photos and history on St. John’s Lutheran Church Emmaus over the last 100 years.

The Lower Macungie AARP will meet noon Oct. 10 in the lower level of Macungie Memorial Hall located at the Macungie Memorial Park. Dues will be collected; bring both cards. Christmas party tickets for Dec. 5 will be available at the October meeting. For more information, contact Dot at 610-967-3284.

The Emmaus Historical Society and Museum, 218 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Stop by for a visit and learn more about this history-filled community.

The historical society’s October program and membership meeting will be 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parish Hall, 501 Chestnut St. The program presented by Andrew Kerstetter is titled “The Corner Stores of Emmaus.” Programs are free and members and nonmembers are welcome to attend.

The society’s museum committee appreciates all donations of memorabilia that came from, was used or enjoyed by those in Emmaus. Join the Hillside School noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 for its annual fall festival and cornhole tournament. Come for the day and enjoy a friendly cornhole tournament, food trucks, pumpkin painting, bounce houses, spin art and much more. The Emmaus Halloween Parade 5K Race will be held 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19. The 5K benefits the Emmaus parks system and the Emmaus Halloween Parade. Runners are encouraged to run in a costume and prizes will be awarded not only for the fastest times but also the best costumes. For more information, visit the Halloween in Emmaus 5K race website.

Help the Lower Macungie Fire Department celebrate 100 years of service to the community at their open house and centennial celebration 10 a.m. Oct. 12. The event will take place at the Lower Macungie Fire Station, 6229 Sauerkraut Lane, Macungie. Events and displays throughout the day include a basket raffle, face painting, local business displays, moon bounce, free souvenir photos, fire apparatus displays and judging and guest speakers. Join Wehrung’s, 3580 Brookside Road, Macungie, for its customer appreciation sale 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5. The event will have music, food, live wood carving and much more including their popular fill-a-bag sale. For more information, visit Wehrung’s Facebook page.

The Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., Emmaus, will host a Community Heroes Day 6-7 p.m. Oct. 3. Show up to meet and support our local heroes including firefighters, EMTs and police officers and check out their vehicles and equipment. Halloween activities for the month of October include: the Macungie Halloween Parade 7 p.m. Oct. 12, rain date is Oct. 13, the Emmaus Halloween Parade 7 p.m. Oct. 19, rain date is Oct. 20 and the Alburtis Halloween Parade 7 p.m. Oct. 26, rain date is Oct. 27.

The Macungie Memorial Park will host a trick or trunk or treat 1-5 p.m. Oct. 20.

Trick or treat nights for the community are as follows: Macungie, Lower Macungie and Alburtis Oct. 31 and Emmaus Oct. 25.
