“Rest In Peace: An Early Autumn Afternoon Cemetery Walking Tour,” led by historian Joshua Arthur Fink, will be held 4:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church, 3441 Devonshire Road, Allentown.
The walk will begin in the historic sanctuary of the church and then proceed out to the old and new cemeteries. Participants will view the oldest tombstone on the cemetery that can still be read in its entirety (and the oldest tombstone on any Lutheran or Reformed Cemetery in Lehigh County in its original burial place), as well as the graves of two children from the Revolutionary War period. Also explored will be tombstone cutters who signed their work on some select tombstones, burial sites of Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers, the tombstones of other infants, a woman who died an “unusual death” and a local funeral director.
The program will be held rain or shine and last approximately and hour and a half; it will end with refreshments and fellowship time in the Tilghman K. Kline, Memorial Chapel. Please wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather, and, in case of rain, bring an umbrella.
Donations will be accepted benefiting the history committee.
