LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Gray weather, great golf

One hundred twelve golfers arrived at the Bethlehem Golf Club early Aug. 30, everyone no doubt looking at the dark sky and wondering if the weather would hold. The event, a fundraiser to pay for a new floor in the lunchroom of St. Anne’s School, had already been rescheduled once due to poor conditions on the original date. (Several days of rain had left the course water-logged.) A second cancellation would probably be costly.

But the weather held. In fact, although the sky stayed gray, several players commented afterward that conditions actually were excellent for golf. Another hit was the outstanding Italian meal served after play concluded.

A highlight of the day was the first hole-in-one in a St. Anne’s School tournament. It was scored by Ann Abadessa on the 14th hole (par 3, 160 yards). The award for the ace was a generous cash prize. Prizes for the “longest drives” (golf passes for two at Butter Valley) were awarded to Nancy Becker for the women and Rich Gorski for the men. Matt Fritz won the “closest to the pin” competition (golf passes for two at the Steel Club).
