Young Hawks fall at Easton
It’s been a roller coaster ride for Bethlehem Catholic’s football team so far this year and head coach Tyler Ward just wants some consistency from his group.
The Hawks dropped to 2-2 on the season last week following a 28-7 loss to Easton on the road.
Easton’s Will Day scored three rushing scores on the night to catapult the Rovers (3-1) to their third straight win of the season.
Ward acknowledged that his team needs to eliminate mistakes if they want to be a successful team down the stretch.
“We need to look in the mirror first,” said Ward. “We gotta get our penalties in check because that’s holding our offense back. We’re doing things to ourselves that’s hurting us from sustaining drives. If we control those things we’ve been a good football team, but when we don’t we hurt ourselves.”
The Hawks committed nine penalties for 69 yards last week and also turned the ball over three times, which certainly doesn’t help anyone’s chances of winning football games.
The seven points scored was a season low for the Becahi offense and Ward knows there were missed opportunities.
“After watching it on film we didn’t play quite as well up front as I would have liked,” he said. “They [Easton] won the line of scrimmage. We had plenty of opportunities that could have potentially balanced out the game, but we didn’t win any of the momentum chances. Ball just didn’t bounce our way.”
It now sets up a midseason Holy War showdown with Central Catholic Saturday at BASD Stadium.
The Vikings (2-2) are coming off a 35-16 victory over Pocono Mountain East last week and both teams could use this week as a catapult heading into the second half of the season.
“The best thing is just to focus on the big task at hand this week,” said Ward. “I think that’ll give our guys an opportunity to play in a game that really matters and was away the disappointment of last week. Got to check your emotions with this one and we know this is a rivalry and we need to stay composed.
“We still have everything in front of us. You’re not going to go undefeated in the EPC and sometimes a little bit of adversity is a good thing for a young team.”
