Volleyball picks up wins

The Whitehall girls volleyball team got out to a rough start to their 2024 campaign going 1-7 in their first 8 contests. However, over the past week they’ve added a pair of wins to their ledger, knocking off Pen Argyl and claiming a straight set divisional win against Allen on Saturday, 25-11, 25-23, 25-13.

Head coach Cristal Fernandez spoke about the confidence that the sweep could bring, “The last two matches went five (sets) and we really needed this in three to get back to believing in themselves. Our league isn’t easy. It’s up and down and all over the place. It feels good to get a win in three.”

The first set started out closer than it finished. The Zephs only led 7-6 before ripping off 4 straight points to seize the momentum and never looked back.

The second set provided a some drama to keep the attendees engaged. The two squads were tied as late 16-all and the Canaries saved three set points before Keona Spooner put away a clean kill from the middle to end it.

A 7-point Zephyr run early in the third set made sure that there would be no worries about the outcome.

Keirdyn Snyder led the offense with 9 kills. LaSereon James tallied 8. Spooner had 7 and Corynn Troxell had 5. Jenna Conrad dished out an even 30 assists. Conrad also led the team in digs with 10. Liliana Beacher and Allison Keck both had 6.

Fernandez described the challenges of developing young players in the middle of the season, “The schedule is rough. This week we had four matches. Next week we have another four matches. It’s hard. We really don’t get to practice. They’re always in go mode. There’s never a time to take to regain our thoughts or work on something we see.”

The next home match for Whitehall is Friday against Northampton at 4:30, right before the Zephyrs and K-Kids tangle on the football field at 7.
