Freedom’s girls soccer team rebuilt its confidence with seven goal-scorers, a hat trick, a clean sheet, and a 10-0 victory over Pocono Mountain West on Sept. 11 at Freedom.

“It was nice to see a bunch of the girls get in the scorebook today to build a little confidence because I think, right now, that’s one thing we were lacking a little bit after those losses,” said Freedom coach Tony Billone, regarding matches against Parkland and Whitehall.

“We started off very strong with a 2-0 loss to Parkland. We held them scoreless in the second half, and I thought our team played with tremendous heart. And then we lost the next game to Whitehall. We were up, 1-0, and we thought the game was over. We dialed it back a little bit, and then we ended up losing 2-1. From that point, it was hard to get ourselves back with the energy, the desire, the heart again to find a way to win games.

“We’re struggling with scoring goals. We were looking for a real number 9 to put the ball in the back of the net, so we’ve been trying different formations, girls in different positions, and it was nice to see Hannah (Heidemann) today step up because she was one that was struggling a little bit to find the back of the net.”

Heidemann, a midfielder, found the back of the net twice within the first 20 minutes on assists from Abigail Plasco.

“The first one...that was my first of the season, so that felt good,” Heidemann said.

Avery Billone scored the first and third goal of the match, also within the first 20 minutes of play.

Isabella Webb, Abigail Barone, Teagan Frederickson, and Emily Sutton doubled the Patriots’ lead by halftime on assists by Danni Herman, Grace Burke, and Sutton.

“We were able to take an extra touch if we needed, to hold the ball a little longer if it was needed,” Coach Billone said.

Heidemann accomplished the hat trick in the 47th minute on an assist by Gabby Sena.

“I was just happy that our team worked up to where we were today, and especially with our defender Gabby Sena. She made a great run and a great pass, so I was very happy,” said Heidemann. “I think this game really helped our team chemistry. It was a little slower-paced, so we got our time to see the field.”

Plasco capped off the match with a goal in the 52nd minute.

Namelia Duro and Cassidy Huston split goalkeeping duties for the Patriots.

Freedom will travel to Emmaus on Sept. 19 before a Bethlehem rivalry match against Becahi on Sept. 20.
