Liberty makes playoffs
It likely was his lowest team’s seed in 10 years, but veteran Liberty head golf coach Steve Bradley is happy to be there.
The Hurricanes recently became the eighth and last team to qualify for the East Penn Conference (EPC) tournament that began at Great Bear Golf Course in East Stroudsburg. They will face undefeated and top-seeded Nazareth.
Other teams in the tournament are Northampton, Parkland, Stroudsburg, Pocono Mountain East, Emmaus, and Pleasant Valley.
To qualify, Liberty edged Freedom, 413-424 in their final regular-season match. The Hurricanes finished with an 8-7 overall record. Bradley watched his team nearly add three more wins to their total this season, however.
Liberty has been led throughout the season by Jake Wachinski, Adam Unangst, Trent Stahley, Cameron Rodriguez, and Ryan Cummings.
“We lost two matches by one stroke and also lost one by four strokes,” stated Bradley. “We easily could have had three more wins.
“We have a good, young team. They are always very eager to play, and they have been lowering their strokes.
“Regardless of how we do in the (EPC) tournament, we’ll have some of them in the district tournament.”
Freedom head coach Mike Evans saw his season as one of unfulfilled promises, as the Patriots finished with an overall 7-8 record. Evans projected his club to be either 9-6 or 10-5 for the season.
“We had a season of ‘what ifs,’” said Evans. “We had five matches that we knew would be toss-ups, and we unfortunately went 0-5 in those matches. We had trouble pulling it together in big matches. We lost to Emmaus by five strokes, and they went 13-2.
However, Evans is still looking forward to the postseason.
“We do have three boys and one girls qualifying for the district tournament,” he added. “We’ll be looking forward to that.”
