Block party marks back to school

The Bethlehem Health Bureau held a Back to School Block Party in Madison Park Aug. 21.

Parents and children were given checklists to follow for the multiple giveaways. Bethlehem’s fire department gave out carbon monoxide detectors to adults and plastic firefighter hats for kids. Filled pencil cases and backpacks were available for students. Parents returning their completed check list to the Health Department table received a raffle ticket.

Free haircuts were given by Frankie Ayala and barbers from Emmaus Cuts. Ayala, who grew up on the Southside of Bethlehem, said he was happy to come back to help the community. There was also a face painting station. At the hand-washing station, members of the Health Department shined a special light on students hands to show if they were clean.

Tickets were distributed for both Kona Ice and the Whiz Kids food truck. Both vendors were wildly popular. A tiny sprinkle of rain failed to dampen the festivities.

DJ CapCee provided the music.
