A drag parody of a beloved sitcom arrives at Civic Theatre of Allentown and the reopening of The Pines Dinner Theatre has again been delayed.
“Olden Girls: Rose Knows” runs Sept. 12-14 at Civic Theatre.
Pines Dinner Theatre officials say that construction delays will push the opening of its new location in Allentown to November.
It’s the second drag parody of “The Golden Girls,” written by Jerry Schmidt, an Allentown native who lives in Kunkletown, Monroe County
Schmidt wrote his first comedy play 30 years ago, which led him to found the Enigma Players in 1994. The troupe performed at Theater Outlet and the Stonewall, which Schmidt managed from 2011 to 2020.
“Over the next eight years, I pumped out over 75 scripts and, man oh man, did we have fun,” Schmidt says.
Schmidt, who plays Rose in the parody, says he is a huge fan of Susan Harris, writer of “The Golden Girls” (1985-1992), the sitcom about four older women who live together.
Before being closed down by the pandemic in 2020, Schmidt had done staged readings of “Golden Girls” episodes at SteelStacks, Bethlehem.
“It was great fun, but I thought original episodes would be better,” Schmidt says.
“My first one was closer to the show format with lots of quick scenes. This one is two acts with only one scene per act.”
Schmidt’s first parody, “Olden Girls: All-Inclusive” at Civic in 2023, was well-received.
Joining Schmidt in portraying the well-known quartet are Timothy Cocoa Hahn as Blanche; Lamont Hosfeld as Dorothy and Ariel Torres as Sophia.
The supporting cast includes Troy Brokenshire as the inspector and Giovanni Marini as the imposter.
Directing is William Sanders, Civic Theatre of Allentown Artistic Director.

Pines Dinner Theatre was to open “Always … Patsy Cline,” Sept. 20 at the theater’s new location, the former Pistachio Bar & Grille, Shops at Cedar Point, 315 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Allentown. However, Pines officials say that construction at the new site is taking longer than anticipated, so the reopening is postponed.
The dinner theater, which had been at 448 N. 17th St., Allentown, for 14 years, moved when the lease on the former location was not renewed in 2023.
Pines originally planned to open at the new site with “Footloose the Musical,” June 1, but that production has been postponed to July 5, 2025.
In an announcement on Pines’ Facebook page, it’s stated that the theater “ran into a major bottleneck with the interior layout of the space,” which ended up taking eight months.
Since them, Pines said it has received City of Allentown approval of the plans and was issued a building permit.
Pines co-owner Oliver Blatt says the new space includes a kitchen and state-of-the-art stage.
The announcement said “work has already begun to transform the space, and barring any unforeseen craziness, we plan to be open in our new location for ‘White Christmas.”’
“White Christmas” is scheduled to run Nov. 8 to Dec. 29.
According to Pines officials, licensing requirements for “Always … Patsy Cline” are making it harder to reschedule the show.
The announcement said the estate of Patsy Cline “has very stringent regulations that need to be followed, and we don’t have the flexibility that we would have with a different show title. As soon as we have details to announce concerning this show, we will let everyone know.”
