Van Lierop sets blistering goal-scoring pace in ‘24

In his first three seasons of varsity soccer, Jacob Van Lierop scored 31 goals, including a season-high 19 in his junior season.

In seven games of his senior season, his stats are video game worthy. Van Lierop has 25 goals and has not just scored in every game this season but has scored at least three goals in every game this season.

To put that in perspective, last season Matt Johnson was the team’s leading scorer and finished with 39 goals on the season. Head coach Nate Hunsicker was optimistic about Van Lierop’s prospects for the season, but it’s likely that even he could not have imagined that Van Lierop would be this good.

Van Lierop added 11 goals in three games over the past week as Northwestern (5-0-0 Colonial, 7-0-0 overall) picked up wins over Palisades (1-3-0, 2-5-0), Notre Dame – Green Pond (3-2-0, 3-3-0), and Bangor (3-2-0, 4-3-0).

In an 8-0 shutout of Palisades, Van Lierop scored four times and Caelan Stangil chipped in with two goals of his own and also contributed two assists, as did Cole Mertz.

Jack Mauro and Cayden Lloyd completed the scoring with one goal each.

From there, the Tigers faced Notre Dame – Green Pond and the Crusaders became one of just three teams to score against Northwestern this season, but Van Lierop’s four goals carried the day in a 4-1 win.

Brandon Krapf picked up his second shutout of the week and fourth of the season in a 7-0 win over the Bangor Slaters.

Seniors Garrett Jones and Ben Bachman both picked up their first goals of the season in the win with Jones’ goal being the first of his varsity career. Mauro and Stangil both scored a goal, and Van Lierop added his three goals for the win.

The seven-game winning streak has put Hunsicker over the 250-win plateau for his career. It was just under two years ago when he crossed the 200-win mark and continues to quickly pile up wins.

Hunsicker is in his 14th season of coaching and has said in the past that he hopes to coach at least until his two sons, who are currently in sixth and fourth grade, come through the program and graduate.

The road ahead has the Tigers playing just their second home game of the season against Pen Argyl (0-3-0, 3-4-0) to start a stretch of three straight games at Tiger Stadium.

Following in the Green Knights will be Southern Lehigh (4-0-0, 5-1-1) and then Lehighton (2-3-0, 2-3-0).
