McCartney, Campbell lead team at invitational
The Emmaus cross country teams opened the 2024 season at Saturday’s Northampton Invitational.
The 5-time defending district champion Emmaus girls team finished third at the meet, while the Hornet boys were eighth overall and the top-finishing District 11 team at the event, which attracted some of the top teams from both the East Penn Conference, Colonial League and Schuylkill League, as well as some top competition from the suburban Philadelphia area.
Defending District 11 champ Mady McCartney led the Emmaus girls team Saturday, followed close behind by teammate Payton Campbell. McCartney, a junior, ran the event in 18:33 for third place overall, while Campbell, a senior, finished fourth in 18:46. The rest of the Emmaus top five included sophomore Grace Nosal (36th) and seniors Isabella Scarlata (44th) and Addison Johnson (45th).
Downingtown West freshman Julia Kelly won the Northampton Invitational varsity girls race in 17:46.1, with Perkiomen Valley senior Allison Matasich coming in second at 18:12.9.
The Emmaus boys team was the top finisher among Lehigh Valley teams Saturday, taking eighth place.
Senior Richard Will led Emmaus with a 37th-place finish in 17:02.1, followed by junior Ryan Fach (42nd), seniors Conor Fisher (43rd) and Jared Petre (46th) and sophomore Calvin Schucker (119th) rounding out the top five.
Frankfort senior Ryan Hughes won the boys varsity race in 15:27.1, followed by Chase Choudhry (Exeter) in 15:31.4.
Emmaus junior Olivia Fleck won the junior varsity girls race Saturday with a time of 20:51.6, leading the Hornets to a JV girls team title.
In other sub-varsity races Saturday, the Emmaus boys junior varsity team finished fourth overall, led by David Hearn in 15th place.
