LHS girls now 7-1

Liberty’s girls tennis team improved its record to 7-1 after defeating Allentown Central Catholic on Sept. 3 at Liberty.

“We had an early loss to Parkland, but we’re getting better everywhere,” said Liberty coach Chris Conrad. “Two doubles is one of the strongest doubles that we see in the district.”

Liberty’s No. 2 pair of Abigail Mayes and Katie Bruno won their match against the Vikette duo (names unavailable), 6-3, 6-3.

“As soon as we started getting the momentum up and we won a couple games, the volley started helping, like, the overheads,” said Mayes. “Right at the beginning, we were worried about the score. It was more knowing that we have to keep getting the ball back in play.”

It also helps that Mayes and Bruno are friends, which translates to their chemistry on the court.

“I think this is the most fun I’ve had playing doubles,” Bruno said. “During our matches, we’re laughing and jumping around, doing our high-fives. Even when we’re down, we’re positive.”

Paulina Vereschaga and Sarah Wang won at No. 3 doubles for the Hurricanes, 6-4, 6-4, and at No. 4 doubles, Liberty’s Polina Dorman and Ellie Episcopio won, 6-4, second set score unavailable.

In singles play, Helena Lynn won at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, and Stephanie Zheng won at No. 2 by injury default, both for the Hurricanes.

Liberty’s Corinne Mumma suffered her first loss of the season at No. 3 singles, 1-4, 4-6, after attempting a noteworthy comeback in the second set.

“Corinne’s been undefeated all year. This is her first loss, and looking at the rest of the season, it might be her only, but the girl she played is very similar to her, and she fought back and did everything she could,” Coach Conrad said. “She tried to make some adjustments and fought back from 15-40 in the last game where it was three match points, defended two of them, and then lost on a clipper at the end at deuce, so she was in the match. She was right there with her.”

This week, Liberty will host Bethlehem Catholic on Sept. 11 before traveling to Northampton on Sept. 13.
