Kernechel, Nawarynski score hat tricks vs. BC
The Emmaus High School field hockey team was challenged to open up the 2024 regular season, but it came out on top of that first game and the next two games to begin the campaign undefeated, all three via shutouts in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The Green Hornets scored just one goal and had to hold on to take down Easton on the road, 1-0 last Monday, August 26.
Two nights later, Emmaus had its home opener and defeated Bethlehem Catholic 13-0 on Wednesday night and closed out the week with a 7-0 victory at Northampton Friday afternoon.
In the win over the Red Rovers, Marissa Gigliotti had the lone goal for the Hornets, on an assist from Emmy Horner. Aiko Price finished with three saves in cage. Emmaus held a 12-3 advantage in shots and 12-7 edge in penalty corners.
Against the Golden Hawks, seven different players found the back of the net, led by a hat trick from Autum Kernechel and Sadie Nawarynski. Madi Lenig and Emmy Horner both finished with two goals and each of Addison Povilaitis, Sharlise Solano and Kaitlyn Carter found the back of the net once.
Emmaus had 29 shots and did not allow one on its own cage while tallying a 10-0 penalty corner advantage.
The Hornets broke open the game with the Kids in the second half, scoring five of their seven goals, including four in the third quarter. Horner recorded both of her goals in the first half, one in the first quarter and one in the second. Lenig and Nawarynski both scored twice in the third quarter and Gracie Huffer netted a goal in the fourth to round out the scoring. Price made one save.
Emmaus had 23 shots, 19 on goal, compared to just one for Northampton. It also finished with 19 penalty corners compared to two for the Kids.
Emmaus has three conference games this week beginning with one this past Tuesday night at home against Pocono Mountain West. The Green Hornets are at East Stroudsburg South Thursday and then finish off the week hosting Pleasant Valley on Saturday morning.
