Hornets roll past Reading
After dropping a one-score game on opening week, the Emmaus High School football team has responded by winning its next two games, including its latest last weekend.
The Green Hornets (2-1 overall) scored 17 in the first quarter and took down Reading High School 38-7 last Friday night in a nonconference game at East Penn School District Stadium.
Emmaus had complete control of the game from the get-go and was dominant on both sides of the ball, accounting for 511 yards of total offense, while only allowing 117 yards on defense.
Will Buck connected on a 32-yard field goal on Emmaus’ opening possession to get them on the scoreboard. Back-to-back touchdowns by the Hornets’ offense gave them a commanding 17-0 lead before the first quarter was over. Quarterback Jerek Cooper threw to Kai Jefferson-Rushing for a 15-yard touchdown and that was followed by a nine-yard run to pay dirt by Reilly Bechtel.
Jah’Khi Daves and Zach Stevens both came up with interceptions on two straight defensive possessions for Emmaus, which helped it add on to the lead.
Jay Santos accounted for the lone score of the second quarter as he took a handoff 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Hornets a 24-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Cooper connected with Daniel Duggan for a 32-yard touchdown pass and catch on just the second play of the opening drive for the Hornets. Neo Michel then put the game into the mercy rule with a 15-yard touchdown run and a 38-0 lead in the middle of the third.
The Red Knights were able to prevent the shutout with a two-yard score on a third down play late in the third quarter.
Cooper threw for 81 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 33 yards. Santos accounted for 53 yards on the ground and a score, while Michel tallied 40 rushing yards and a touchdown. Duggan caught two passes for 22 yards with a touchdown, while Cole Moreau had a catch for 38 yards.
Defensively, Joseph Glover led the unit with eight tackles and two sacks. Santos, Asher Dougherty, Ben Dennis and Robert Edwards all finished with four tackles with Dennis adding a sack.
Emmaus next will head north for a matchup at Stroudsburg on Friday night.
