Deeb steps down, doesn’t step away

Last week, Salisbury High School Director of Student Activities Monica Deeb concluded her career as a Falcons administrator after over two decades at the school. The SHS alum retired effective Aug. 31, and steps away from her dream job.

“My time at Salisbury has meant the world to me,” said Deeb. “It’s very difficult to put into words. I started in July of 1999 and was able to work at my alma mater for 25 years. It has been an honor and a privilege.”

Deeb has seemingly always been around sports growing up, even before she started her post at Salisbury. As a Falcon student-athlete, she played tennis, basketball and softball before continuing her basketball career at Moravian College.

After her time as a Greyhound was over, Deeb began working in the newspaper industry, making stops at The Express Times, East Penn Publishing and The Morning Call.

In her 25 years at the helm, there were many positive memories from Falcon sports accomplishments that happened, too many to even remember all of them.

“Wow, there were so many,” Deeb said. “I don’t want to miss any of them. I would say the boys swimming and diving team winning states in 2013 and the baseball team playing for the state championship in 2011 are tops on the list.

“I also loved watching our soccer, basketball and baseball teams win Colonial League and District 11 titles.”

What made those accomplishments so rewarding was seeing Falcon athletes’ hard work pay off with success.

“I will never forget the game-winning 35-foot shot Daniel Reichenbach made against Wilson in a district quarterfinal game in 2013,” said Deeb. “Jake Zellin’s walk-off grand slam that sent the baseball team to the district final this spring was incredible. It was amazing when John Yurconic and his cousin Mason Groff won the PIAA boys doubles title in 2016. Swimmer Mahlon Reihman, a 2017 graduate, won three individual state titles and was a part of a state title winning relay team in his tremendous career.

“I am also very proud of our many Debate Championships and Twirling Championships, our Scholastic Scrimmage title in 2017 and the Freddy nominations and awards our theater program has earned over the years. I am so grateful to have witnessed so much in my time at Salisbury.”

Her time in the office and overseeing athletic events may be over, but Deeb still plans to be around and helping out the department.

“I am organizing the outside concession stand, with the help of so many wonderful volunteers, and plan to attend events when I can,” said Deeb. “So expect to see me supporting Salisbury athletics/extracurricular activities at home and on the road.”
