Girls roll past ESS

Sometimes a mismatch on paper turns out to be exactly that once the teams step on the court. Such was the case when East Stroudsburg South ventured to Northampton for a girls volleyball match last Thursday.

The K-Kids trounced the overmatched Cavaliers 25-17, 25-11, 25-9.

“It was nice to have a win after yesterday (a straight set loss to Emmaus). You get to play other players and try to continue to grow. Sometimes you play a little light, but the better programs don’t let teams like that score a bunch. The first set was a little rocky, but we figured it out,” explained head coach Mike Holihan.

Claire Erdman had 7 kills. Morgan Chandler, Izzy Pecuch, and Quinn Micheli all had 5. Addie Morgan had 16 assists. Lizzy Sheldon led the defense with 10 digs. Leah Everhart had 8. Chandler also posted a team-high 7 service aces.

More compelling this past week were a couple of road matches. The Kids dropped a tough 5-setter against Pleasant Valley on Saturday. Normally a loss to the Bears most sports would raise eyebrows, but they were 19-2 last season and made the EPC semifinals.

The set scores were 23-25, 25-10, 25-18, 16-25, 11-15, so Northampton won more total points, but lost 3 sets to 2.

Micheli had 9 kills and 9 digs. Erdman notched 8 kills with 25 digs. Addie Morgan had 26 assists. Sheldon led the team with 38 digs.

The Kids bounced back to score a sweep against a quality Freedom team on Tuesday, 25-13, 25-21, 25-23.

Micheli and Erdman led offense once again with 7 and 6 kills respectively. Sheldon was tops with 30 digs, followed by Erdman with 11. Addie Morgan dished out 20 assists. Morgan Chandler had 5 blocks.

Perhaps most importantly, Claire Luckenbach returned to the court after missing a couple of matches due to injury.

Northampton is 4-3 overall, 3-3 in the EPC. They have good chance to pick up a couple of conference wins this week with home matches against Easton on Thursday and Allen on Monday.
