Girls off to good start

Despite not having a large team, combined with some injuries, the Whitehall girls soccer team has managed to stay the course over their first five games.

The are 3-2 through that stage of their season with wins over Palmerton 3-1, Freedom 2-1 and Eastburg South 4-0. The team dropped games to Emmaus 6-0 and Easton 6-2.

“The team is managing with low, overall numbers and several significant injuries,” said head coach Chris Bleam. “Overall, the team is progressing and the very young lineup is maturing quickly. The 2-1 win over freedom was a great learning experience as the group overcame a slow start, early 0-1 deficit and adjusted well to the opponent’s physical play to come back for the 2-1 win.”

Sophomore Collene Sommers continues to be a standout for the Zephs. Though five games she leads the team in scoring with five goals and three assists for 13 points.

“Sommers leads the team in scoring and defends effectively as well,” Bleam said. “She is complimented but junior Morgan Laub in the midfield; Morgan has also played a good amount at center back due to injury to senior Jade Alvarez.”

Senior Sage Snyder has two goals and two assists this far for six points.

“Snyder is very effective as a playmaking center forward,” Bleam added.

“Outside backs junior Audrey Muller and sophomore Olivia Tabarani have been outstanding throughout the first five games.,” said Bleam.

Others contributing to the scoring are junior Emma Potocnie, who has three goals and six assists, and freshman Larken Good, who has a goal and two assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cora Musselman has been solid as well, added Bleam. Kyla Braun has a goal and an assist.

“The team will look to improve their 3-2 record this week as they face three Pocono area opponents.,” Bleam said.
