Church holds night of fun for community

First Presbyterian Church of Hokendauqua, 3005 S. Front St., Whitehall, held a family fun night on the sunny and warm evening of July 21. The event, led by the Rev. Chuck Monts, was a small gathering centered on neighborliness and teamwork.

Monts began the event by discussing what it means to be a good neighbor and how individuals can support those in the community by taking the time to chat, engage and be friendly to one another. The group went around in a circle, sharing titles of songs that reminded them of being neighborly. Some songs mentioned were “U.S.A. for Africa, We Are the World” sung by a variety of artists for a charity event; “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” by Fred Rogers, the theme song to “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”; and “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne Warwick.

Following the short discussion, the group was divided into two teams and was tasked with competing in a food relay match. Monts and church volunteers set up a table of assorted foods, including baby food, spicy chips, lemons, uncooked pasta, marshmallows, raisins and soda. Each team sent up one member at a time to finish one of the food items on the table, and the baby food was inevitably one of the last items left for each team.

The group was in high spirits, and laughs were shared.

Monts reminded the group to prepare for an upcoming block party, which was held Aug. 24 at the church.
