Pates get statement win over Parkland

It’s early in the football season, but anytime you can get a win over Parkland, it means something.

Anytime you dominate them, it’s an even bigger deal. That’s what Freedom did last week during a 30-13 victory at BASD Stadium on Friday night.

Chase Walker threw two touchdown passes to Shacre Colwell and Aaron Beete showed off his electric playmaking in the backfield, rushing 160 yards and two scores as Freedom ran away with the victory to improve to 2-0.

“It’s only week two but to get a win over a program Like Parkland is huge for us,” said Freedom head coach Jason Roeder. “They’re Parkland and if you can beat them, it’s gotta be a confidence boost for our kids, but we know it’s early and they’re [Parkland] going to keep getting better, so we need to keep getting better.”

Freedom led 14-7 at halftime thanks two dazzling scores in the first half when Walker threw a 13-yard score to Colwell with an outstanding over the shoulder grab to register the opening points in the first quarter. Beete then broke off a 78-yard rushing score midway through the second period where he looked like the fastest player in the league to build the lead to 14-0.

Parkland chiseled their way back into the game when Leo Dauberman punched it in from a yard out with 3:09 remaining in the second quarter to cut the lead in half.

The Pates took control of the game in the third period when Colwell snagged a 15-yard score with 9:27 left in the quarter, followed by Beete’s second score of the night coming less than four minutes later with a three-yard plunge to lead 28-7 and the outcome was never threatened again.

“It’s a young football team and we battled, but we made too many mistakes mentally and physically,” said Parkland head coach Tim Moncman. “We’ll fix the mistakes and try and get back on track next week. The inexperience can’t be an excuse anymore. It’s time to grow up and hopefully we start that next week.”

The victory by Freedom snapped a five-game losing streak in the series to Parkland and recorded the 300th win in Freedom’s football history. While the win was big in week two of a long football season, Roeder kept things in perspective on what it means moving forward.

“We said going into the game, there’s no medals or trophies tonight,” said Roeder. “This is week two. Sure, to beat a team like that is awesome, but there’s still a lot of work to do and this is a long haul. We know what’s ahead of us.”
