Liberty, Freedom golfers in EPC playoff hunt

In just three years, Liberty’s Jake Wachinski has developed into the Hurricanes’ top overall golfer.

Wachinski has helped Liberty stay the East Penn Conference (EPC) hunt, and Freedom also has ideas of reaching the postseason.

“I started playing golf in 2021, and have really enjoyed learning the game,” said the sophomore. “I started playing golf with my dad just for fun and fell in love with it. I have been playing ever since.

“I have been putting in a lot of time and work since I started playing and have been happy to see consistent improvement in my game.”

Wachinski, whose average has been 80, has continued to work on his game.

“The biggest adjustment to my game has been getting my first major swing lessons this summer from Paul Viola,” added Wachinski. “He helped me make some major swing improvements>”

Wachinski is among a group of budding players for veteran head coach Steve Bradley’s club that begins a transition period from being a perennial league and state power the last few seasons.

Along with Wachinski, fellow sophomore Cameron Rodriguez (85), and seniors Trent Stahley (81) and Adam Unangst (81) have been consistent and have lead the team to a 6-3 record. The Hurricanes had a pivotal quad-match with Emmaus, Stroudsburg, and Nazareth Tuesday.

“These guys have been hitting the ball well,” said Bradley. “We feel we can be in a good position for the tournament if we took two of three in Tuesday’s quad-match.

“We know we still have some pressure situations ahead.”

Freedom head coach Mike Evans had his club at 7-5 to begin the week, and he also is aware of his team’s postseason chances. The Patriots are led by seniors Nick Hoffman (80 average), Nolan Harriman (81), Eric Gerger (84) and Matt Heineman (84). They are all vying for spots in the District 11 qualifier.

“We have three matches to play (Emmaus, Pleasant Valley, and Liberty),” said Evans. “We’re hoping to win two of the remaining three as all of them will be competitive. A 9-6 finish would likely be good enough to be eligible for the EPC tournament.”
