Golf team growing, seeing close losses

Whitehall head golf coach George Cowitch and his Zephyrs are leaning how golf can be a close game this season.

The Zephyrs lost five matches this season by a total of eight strokes or less. They have a 3-9 record to start the season that could have looked a lot different. Whitehall recently lost a match to Liberty, 393-438.

“We have had a lot of close matches,” said Zephyrs’ head coach George Cowitch. “We have been playing well, and shooting good scores, but it just hasn’t been enough.”

The Zephyrs opened the season with a 420-489 loss to Freedom, followed by a 489-535 win over East Stroudsburg North. They then dropped matches to Nazareth (390-489) and Allentown Central Catholic (431-444).

From there, they late notched victories over Pocono Mountain West (398-614) and East Stroudsburg South (444-542).

Leading the way for the Zephyrs are senior Tommy and junior Jack Lloyd. Tommy Lloyd has been averaging a 75 and Jack Lloyd is holding with an 82.

Senior Julian Saba has been shooting consistently in the 80s, and freshman Logan Shean has been a surprise. Shean recently fired a career-low 91.

Cowitch understands patience will be a virtue with his squad this fall, as the Zephyrs are learning and growing along the way. The Zephyrs’ team-low score was 398 against Pocono Mountain West, and they registered a 406 in a tight loss to Stroudsburg (406-410).

In the Stroudsburg match, Jack Lloyd shot a 77, and Tommy Lloyd shot a 79.

“We have a lot of guys who don’t have a lot of experience,” he said. “We have been coming along. The guys have been lowering their scores.”

Cowitch has been grateful from the support from assistant coach Joe Egan.

“My assistant and I are very pleased in the way we are playing,” stressed Cowitch. “These are great kids who are working hard to be a tough opponent in the league.”

Cowitch is optimistic that the Zephs can make a run at the postseason.

“We have Pocono Mountain East at Sky Top this week,” said Cowitch. “We are continuing to look to better our team average and get two guys two guys to qualify for the league and district playoffs.”
