Girls soccer team happy with start
So far, Catasauqua first-year head soccer coach David Harth is enjoying the ride.
This season, Harth took over for Kayla Cunningham, who stepped down to dedicate more time to her family after three years as the head coach. Harth isn’t a stranger to the sport or the Catty soccer circles, as he was a coach on youth and club teams for 14 years.
Harth named seniors Maya Ostero, Caroline Rodriguez, and Faith Daku along with junior Julia Harth as captains for the season. The Roughies opened the season with a 3-0 loss at Kutztown on Aug. 24.
Despite the opening loss, Harth saw plenty of promise. The Roughies downed Pocono Mountain West 6-1 in a preseason scrimmage.
“We played hard,” he said. “It was a good start and we showed a lot early on. We had a good scrimmage, and we knew there would be plenty of positives ahead.”
The Roughies posted their first victory of the season, a 2-0 shutout over Salisbury on Aug. 26. Daku and Mia Gomes registered goals in their initial victory, Brooke Barna recorded the shutout in the nets.
A few days later, the Roughies gained a 2-1 victory over Wilson to raise their season mark to 2-1-1 overall. Daku had three goals during the span, and Barna has been steady defending the back.
The Roughies also had a scoreless tie with Jim Thorpe that consisted of only 47 minutes due to lightning. The game was called, and it has yet to be rescheduled.
This week, the Roughies will host Bangor Tuesday, travel to Palmerton Thursday, and host Lehighton Saturday.
“We have a tough schedule ahead of us and we look to improve every week,” noted Harth. “Brooke Barna has been strong in goal and the defense has been playing great.
“We have been working, and you can see the results. The girls are confident and positive moving forward.”
