Festival celebrates covered bridge

The Kreidersville Covered Bridge Festival was held June 1 and 2 to celebrate the last remaining covered bridge in Northampton County.

The well-attended festival offered food, live entertainment, free hayrides and a number of vendors, craft beer tasting, a basket raffle and a petting zoo. Musical entertainment was provided by Big Valley Bluegrass, James Supra Band, SteelCreek Band and the Large Flowerheads.

A wide range of foods was served by volunteers. The kitchen volunteers were busy serving hungry patrons all afternoon. Roxy Lesisko and Northampton Area School District cheerleaders served ice cream.

Claire Derakhshan, of Wildlands Conservancy, brought a snake named Dom, a skunk named Aster and a miniature screech owl named Bertrum.

The petting zoo included a Black Angus steer named Nanny Bee from Just Enuff Angus Farm and goats. Nanny Bee was monitored by Ethan Brozmen, of Nazareth. Piglets, ducks and other birds were also at the event.

Ida Bachman and Ben Steitz, of Baker Ben’s Bakery at 4330 Lehigh Drive, Walnutport, offered a wide array of baked goods. The bakery features doughnuts, muffins, cakes, pies, breads and more. Call 610-224-9191 for more information.

AK Farms of Northampton provided fresh, organic and GMO-free pork products for sale. Visit the AKFarms Facebook page for more information about the quality pork products it sells.

Lehigh Valley Home Brewers of Allentown, a hobby brewing club, served samples. Edward Ponikvar noted he and his friends have been brewing beer as a club for about 18 years. For more information, visit lehighvalleybrewers.org.

The historic Kreidersville Covered Bridge was built in 1839 and was originally called the Hummel’s-Koch’s-Solt’s Bridge, named after the three families that originally lived near the bridge. The wooden bridge is 116 feet in length, spanning the Hokendauqua Creek.

In the late 1950s, the bridge was to be replaced by a new bridge. Concerned citizens rallied behind saving the covered bridge by organizing groups to advocate saving the wooden structure.

The Kreidersville Covered Bridge Association holds fundraising efforts to support the bridge and coordinates Eagle Scout projects to improve the grounds around the bridge. The group sponsors the annual Kreidersville Covered Bridge Festival weekend every other year.
