Coplay discusses truck enforcement

Coplay Police Department Chief Ryan Emerich discussed truck enforcement for the month of August at the Sept. 3 borough council meeting.

Emerich said the larger problem is that the GPS systems in the trucks are not being updated. Updates would exclude options like local roads, bridges or tunnels based on factors such as truck weight and size. He said a solution to getting big trucks off local roads is to make contact with the companies, at the time of the traffic stop, to force updates instead of handing out written warnings.

In other business, fire Chief Joseph Britt reported the station is in its final phase to become Quick Response Service certified. QRS is designed to provide patients with EMS care before an ambulance arrives.

“This will help our community with a better chance of survival if an ambulance has an extended time of arrival,” Britt said.

Mayor Stephen Burker said he was appreciative of the turnout for Coplay Community Days.

“It was a great year — not a good year but a great year,” Burker said. “We have a lot of work to do to make it better.”

He suggested the next community meeting should address ways to improve the event for next year.

Council is scheduled to discuss an official date for trick or treating and the Halloween parade at the next meeting, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the municipal building, 98 S. Fourth St.
