Police and Bethlehem Area School District officials reported a traffic accident involving a school bus the afternoon of Aug. 28.
Around 2:10 p.m. at Fourth and Edwards streets on the Southside, an SUV struck bus 161 head-on. There were 14 students from the Executive Education Charter School on the bus, several of whom were transported to a nearby hospital, and three suffered minor injuries. Both drivers also reported minor injuries but neither required medical attention.
Police said the bus cameras and eyewitness statements indicate the SUV was traveling westbound on Fourth Street and crossed over the double-yellow line and into the school bus’s path of travel. Both the school bus and SUV required towing from the scene.
Police Chief Michelle Kott said the operator of the SUV was issued summary traffic citations for reckless driving, careless driving, driving on roadways laned for traffic, and driving on right side of roadway. No violations were noted for the operator of the school bus.
